Corné du Plessis

Born in South Africa, 1968

Based in Johannesburg

From a very young age I was fascinated by cameras and photography, which remained part of my life’s journey.

I have had a varied career, from being in the corporate sector to owning an international brand franchise store. In 2013 I decided to pursue my passion for photography as my future career. My passions are reflected in my photographic choices in the fields of automotive, food, product and portrait photography and videography.

I enjoy the challenges each of these fields present and with “out the box” thinking I aim to make each subject look unique.

My own fitness goals and understanding of the male physique quickly led to me honing the skill of male portrait and fitness photography, which naturally evolved into DUDOIR photography.

My understanding of the importance of light in order to get the ultimate photographic results led to the Market Photo Workshop (a division of The Market Theatre Foundation in Newtown, Johannesburg) inviting me to become a senior facilitator to lecture in photography to its students.

2021

I published my first book titled MANSCAPES. It is a fine art coffee table book featuring a body of work on male nudes. The book is available as print-on-demand at Amazon.  As part of the book launch, The Henry George Gallery in Parkhurst Johannesburg held a solo exhibition of my work, which moved to “online” due to Covid-19 restrictions.

2022

My photography entered the world of sculpting.  Initially I transformed photos into 3D sculptures.  Digitally sculpting in 3D was a natural progression, using the technology of 3D printing to bring my sculptures to life before casting the work in ceramic.

2023

The international magazine MODEL SOCIETY featured one of my fine art nude images in its Cover Competition edition that was published in May.

Australian based motoring magazine RETROMOTIVE featured my image of a 1961 Mercedes Benz 300SL on the cover of Issue 19, with a further 11 images accompanying the article about the car.

The annual SculptX Fair is the largest sculpture fair in South Africa, I was one of over 60 artists to exhibit 5 of my sculptures, two of which sold during the fair.

2024

For the second year in a row, my work was selected to be part of the annual SculptX Fair.  The 5 pieces I had on exhibit sold to one collector within the first half an hour of the exhibition opening.

After the exhibition, I was approached to create my first commissioned work for a client.

2025

I continued creating new sculptures and was fortunate to receive two commissions.  One was a life size portrait and the other of a more adult nature.

Apart from honing my sculpting skills, I also developed my ceramics range and my own crystalline glazes.
